I’m new, how do I change the culture that’s been around for over 10 years?
One of the biggest influencers of change is how you, as a people leader, manage the change. As mentioned in the previous post, 70% of change initiatives can fail due to one person’s behavior alone. Your behavior, as the manager, has a direct impact on the outcome of your change initiative. As an effective manager, you have a system that works for you but how reactive is your system? Are you looking at issues as they occur, or dealing with them at a future time? Moving towards a future state that is pro-active will help create the culture that you’re looking for.
Why does my behavior affect the outcome?
Each manager has a different management style, just like each employee has a different working style. One of the toughest parts of change is changing your own behaviors. One of the comments we hear often is that managers spend most of their time firefighting, or answering emails, which all reduce your teams productivity. By changing your behaviors to be more pro-active you can encourage the team to be pro-active as well.
How do I know what my management style is?
At Propel, we like to challenge managers by creating a schedule for themselves. This schedule helps you see what your management style is, and helps you outline what an ideal day, for you, would look lie. We go through the process of dividing managers time into 5 areas:
- Active Management
- Training
- Administration
- Direct Work
- Available to Supervise
By defining a schedule, you are giving yourself, and your team structure, which can be later carried through into their working world through scheduling, which is a topic we’ll discuss later in this series.
As a Manager, your main focus should be managing your team but how can you manage when your own personal workload never seems to end, such as the never-ending inbox. At Propel Solutions, our methodology is based on creating structure throughout your department, which increases overall productivity and gives you the impact you are looking for in your future state.
